On Wednesday 3 July, Cambridge held its first IGCSE Art & Design Day hosted at The Roman Ridge School in Accra, Ghana. The event was facilitated by Fay Head, Head of Arts, English & Languages Portfolio, Qualifications Development, International Education.
The event comprised two main sessions. The first was a focus group discussion aimed at gathering feedback from art educators on the current Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design syllabus and identifying key areas for improvement. The second session was a content and marking criteria workshop, which covered the areas of study in the current syllabus including the techniques, approaches, and teaching methods relevant to the subject.
Speaking at the event, Fay Head said: 'The Art & Design Day was incredibly useful in gathering the views of teachers and specialists from Accra and the wider region. The expertise of educators, who gave up their free time to attend, was especially beneficial for me as a Qualifications developer working on the future vision for the Cambridge Art & Design pathway. The collaboration and openness of attendees made the event a real success.'
The event was also attended by more than 80 school leaders and art teachers from schools across Ghana.
Patience Codjoe, Art and Design Teacher and IGCSE Coordinator at Aves International Academy said she learnt new teaching approaches and pedagogical skills that she will implement with her students. 'The most valuable part for me was when we discussed different topics within different groups and shared our ideas after the discussion. It allowed me to experience collaboration and communication first-hand and allowed me to learn new things and see things I already knew from other points of view.'
Cambridge IGCSE Art & Design stimulates aesthetic awareness, knowledge and critical understanding of art, and provides opportunities for learners to develop a range of skills. The syllabus is designed to accommodate a wide range of abilities, materials and resources, and allows the different skills of the teaching staff to be fully used.
