A fundraising project created by Cambridge Global Perspectives™ students in Brazil so impressed parents and teachers that it is being used to replace an established school event.
Students at Aubrick school in Sao Paulo, Brazil follow Global Perspectives at Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary.
Year 8 student Isabella Moreno explained how their charity project came about.
‘I think that all of us really like Global Perspectives because it is an open space, where we have dynamic and different classes. We can talk about lots of different things.
‘My favourite project was about charity work in Brazil. It was really cool: we divided our class into big groups, and each group came up with an idea for a social event that would raise money.
‘First we had the idea of just having a bazaar and all the money that we collected would be donated to charities. Then we decided that we could have a bigger event, so instead of just having the sale we could have the charities here with us so they can present their work, and have some other activities so we can attract other people from outside the school.
‘We also decided that because we are mature enough we should organise the event ourselves, rather than the school organising it.
‘Every year we have an event at the school to present our work to parents, and we presented our charity project. The parents voted for the best project and now we’re going to actually go ahead with our charity event in school.’
In the three months before the event we will collect clothes, toys, and anything else that people want to donate. We decided that we should sell everything for a low price so that we can sell a lot, and the money that we collect will go to the charity.
‘Things that don’t sell we will give to churches to distribute to homeless people.
Global Perspectives Coordinator Bianca Caligher explained how the project would be put into practice, with pupils from two year groups working together.
‘We have a similar event in the school calendar at the moment but it is organised by third parties.
‘The idea now is to replace that event, with Year 8 and Year 9 learners working on this project to put it into practice.’
