What will I learn?
This course is designed to develop your knowledge and understanding of assessment within this Cambridge syllabus and build confidence in your teaching of this syllabus. You will explore how to use formative and summative assessment to improve student learning.
Under the guidance of an experienced Cambridge trainer, you will:
- identify assessment challenges
- develop a deeper understanding of marking principles
- have the opportunity to apply the marking principles
- explore formative feedback
- collaborate with other Cambridge teachers.
Who is this course for?
This course is designed for teachers who have at least one year's experience of teaching this Cambridge syllabus and/or have attended an Introduction course, as you will be sharing your experiences of teaching this syllabus with other teachers.
If you are new to this syllabus or new to Cambridge programmes and qualifications, we strongly recommend that you attend an Introduction course first.
The syllabus year in the course name refers to the year in which the examination will be taken. You only need to attend a Focus on Assessment course once. So, if you have attended this course, or the equivalent Extension course previously (for this syllabus year), you do not need to attend again.
Who will deliver the course?
This course will be delivered by an accredited Cambridge trainer who is a subject expert with a range of relevant classroom experience and have been involved in some aspect of marking. We do not provide professional development courses delivered by examiners who have seen live papers.
Course schedule
This course will run for a total of 9 hours and will consist of 3 x 3 hour sessions:
- Session 1: Tuesday 8 April 2025, 14:30 - 17:30 (GMT+1)
- Session 2: Wednesday 9 April 2025, 14:30 - 17:30 (GMT+1)
- Session 3: Thursday 10 April 2025, 14:30 - 17:30 (GMT+1)

Virtual platform
Virtual professional development is a lot like our face-to-face professional development. However, it is held over Zoom. You will use a Miro board to collaborate with other teachers. Each session will be live so you will be able to see and talk with the trainer and other teachers and take part in interactive activities.
The link and password to access the course and materials will be provided to registered delegates approximately one week prior to the start date. All materials for this course will be digital and can be downloaded prior to the course.
Booking information
We offer a 20% early bird registration discount for this course if you book your place more than 28 days before the course start date. Please note, registrations will close 48 hours before the first day of the course.
To enable you to get the best from this course, please only book a place if your internet network can be used for a sustained period. Please note, we are unable to provide recordings for our virtual courses.
Participants who attend at least 75% of the course will receive a certificate of participation.
Language
This training will be delivered in English. English language competence comparable to LevelB2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) is necessary to fully participate. We recommend a minimum requirement of 5.5 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). Further information may be obtained through the Council of Europe website.
