Improving Speaking Performance in the Classroom courses are for foreign language teachers of all syllabus levels who want to develop their practice in this area. These courses encourage teachers to reflect on, and take greater responsibility for their teaching as well as become more innovative in their classroom practice.
Aims
Collaboration and reflection are key to effective learning. Under the guidance of an experienced Cambridge tutor, you will be working closely with other teachers to develop your understanding and share ideas and experiences.
In this course you will have the opportunity to become more familiar with the key elements of a speaking lesson including how you can help your learners to improve their speaking ability and to increase their confidence by applying effective speaking practice.
Timings and content
The course lasts five weeks:
- Week 1: Theory and practice
- Week 2: Strategies to develop speaking skills
- Week 3: Preparing for teaching*
- Week 4: Teaching and reflecting*
- Week 5: Course review and next steps
*Weeks 3 and 4 will involve putting what you have learned into practice and reflecting upon the outcome. It is important that you have access to learners during these weeks.
Teachers should expect to spend 3 - 5 hours per week on the course.
Successful completion of this course is based on participation in collaborative activities with teachers from around the world. The discussions and activities each week are in groups. You do not need to be online at a particular time of day for our online courses, but we recommend that you access the course every day. To help you manage your time and aid collaboration, we provide clear guidelines so you know which days to carry out the activities for each week.
Participants who complete key weekly activities and engage fully in discussions throughout the course will receive a certificate.
- A certificate of participation is awarded to participants who complete some of the tasks on the course to a satisfactory level.
- A certificate of completion is awarded to participants who complete the tasks on the course to a satisfactory level.

In order to facilitate rich and meaningful discussions with participants and the course tutor, bookings for our online courses are limited to 25 participants per session.
We offer a 20% early bird registration discount for this course if booked before 09 April 2025. Bookings received after this date will be charged at the full registration price. Please note, registrations will close 24 hours before the course start date.
Language
This course will be delivered in English. All candidates should have English language competence comparable to Level B2 in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). We recommend a minimum requirement of 5.5 on the International English Language Testing System. Further information may be obtained through the Council of Europe website.
