Wencong Chai joined the University of Sydney in 2011 and is currently the Director, Admissions, responsible for the University’s undergraduate, postgraduate and higher degree research admissions for both domestic and international cohorts. This currently involves responsibility for a team of over 50 staff members located both on campus and in dedicated offshore locations. This has been both a challenging and rewarding role using all her experience (and new skills gained during the pandemic period) in an increasingly internationally competitive environment. Wencong especially enjoys the camaraderie of a team dedicated to achieving goals, and has been fortunate to work with many wonderful colleagues and mentors over the years.
Wencong has enjoyed a long career in higher education admissions and student lifecycle management. This journey commenced in the late 1990s at the University of Waikato, New Zealand. Wencong had soon moved to Australia and began to accumulate expertise in the Australian higher education sector. Working in the private education sector, she was primarily concerned with international students and their pathway to tertiary education in Australia, and the myriad of visa and government regulations that need to be considered to effect this.
