Jan Lauwereyns is Senior Vice President for International Affairs, Public Relations, and Endowment & Alumni at Kyushu University. He is also the Head of the Strategic Internationalization Advisory Group and a member of the Management Policy Council at the University. Lauwereyns leads the integration efforts at Kyushu University, creating an environment in which international academics can participate in governance. He is also a co-founder of the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, a flagship educational institution with a global mindset, cutting across disciplines.
Lauwereyns is Professor of Cognitive Science and Bioethics in the Faculty of Arts and Science at Kyushu University. He obtained his PhD in 1998 at the University of Leuven in Belgium, and conducted research at Juntendo University in Japan, the US National Institutes of Health, and Victoria University of Wellington in New Zealand before shifting to Kyushu in 2010. Lauwereyns has published widely, including research papers in journals such as Nature and Neuron, single-authored academic books with the MIT Press, and creative works in his native language, Dutch. His awards include the VSB Poetry Prize and the Hugues C. Pernath Prize.
