Yujin Yaguchi is the Vice President (Global Education) and Professor of American Studies at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences of the University of Tokyo. He also serves as the Director of the Center for Global Education (GlobE), where he leads initiatives to enhance the University’s global education. Over the years, he has taught a diverse range of courses, including US cultural history, Pacific cultural studies, museum studies, and English language.
Born and raised in Sapporo, on Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido, he earned his BA from Goshen College and his master’s and doctoral degrees in American Studies from the College of William and Mary. He has also been a Fulbright visiting scholar at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and the East-West Center in Honolulu.
He has published and presented extensively in both Japanese and English on the intercultural dynamics of Japan–Pacific–US relations, with a particular focus on Hawai’i. His comments on US–Japan relations have appeared in major media outlets, including The New York Times, NHK, CNN and the BBC. His recent book in Japanese critiques the gender gap at the University of Tokyo (far more men than women) from a historical and comparative framework.
